Marriage Life
Biden married Neilia Hunter, a student at Syracuse University, on August 27, 1966 after overcoming her parents’ disinclination for her to wed a Catholic. Their wedding was held in a Catholic church in Skaneateles, New York. They had three children: Joseph R. “Beau” Biden, Robert Hunter Biden, and Naomi Christina “Amy” Biden.
Death of wife and daughter
It had been just a few weeks since Joe Biden had become senator when tragedy struck with the car accident that killed his wife Neilia and one-year-old daughter Naomi on December 18, 1972, while shopping in Hockessin, Delaware. Neilia’s station wagon was hit by a semi-trailer truck when she pulled out from an intersection. Their sons, Beau, 3 years old, and Hunter, 2 years old, were in the car with them. They were taken to the hospital with non-threatening injuries—beau had a broken leg and other wounds and Hunter suffered a minor skull fracture and other head injuries.
He was contemplating resigning in order to take care of his sons. It was then that Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield talked him out of it. He struggled through those months with overwhelming grief, anger, and religious doubt. He even contemplated suicide. As he later said, he “felt God had played a horrible trick” on him.
Second marriage
Joe Biden met his wife, teacher Jill Tracy Jacobs, on a blind date in 1975. They were married June 17, 1977, in the chapel of the United Nations in New York City. Jill Tracy Jacobs was on her honeymoon in Lake Balaton, Hungary. Joe credits Jill with the renewal of interest to politics and living as well. The couple regularly attends Mass at St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine in Greenville, Delaware.
