Early Life
Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was the youngest of five children and grew up in a low-income home in Chicago and Mississippi. After his grandmother passed away, 6–year–old Morgan moved to live with his mother.
As a child, Morgan loved watching movies and admired actors like Gary Cooper and Sidney Poitier. He discovered his own acting talent by accident when he was punished to participate in a drama competition in junior high school. To everyone’s surprise, Morgan won first prize and found his passion for acting.
Military Career
Morgan Freeman loved acting, but his dream was to fly. He wanted to be a fighter pilot. So, after finishing high school education in 1955, Morgan joined the U.S. Air Force. He turned down a scholarship to study drama.
However, life in the Air Force wasn’t what Morgan expected. Instead of flying, he worked on the ground as a mechanic and technician. He realized he didn’t want to hurt anyone.
Morgan had a change of heart. “I wasn’t in love with being in the Air Force,” he said. “I was in love with the idea of it.” In 1959, Morgan left the Air Force and moved to Hollywood to try his luck as an actor.
It wasn’t easy. Morgan took acting classes and found it hard to get work. He moved to New York City in the 1960s and did odd jobs during the day while auditioning at night.
